I used to use an Alesis Micron with this plugin that let you edit all the parameters from your PC it basically made the synth look like a plugin soft-synth, at least from the DAW point of view.
I think it's a pretty neat idea, definitely would have it's applications for moving from studio to live. Zen Core is honestly a really interesting direction. Kronos is the polar opposite of that and Nautilus is pushing more towards that in a way (easier to use, more "streamlined" for you to just get on with it so to speak) so I'm sure the next big release will have a similar theme. Like the people that get all excited about Nords.
I think you have to aim at the people that don't want to have a laptop live. It's a definite shift in the market, and certainly one that's hard to sell a $4k workstation to. Considering how many people have MIDI controller + laptop live rigs nowadays, they'll probably just use that anyways.

or do you spend however long futzing with the Kronos UI that you only sorta know how to use because you don't dig in very often, knowing that if you change your mind on a small detail about the patch down the road you have to dial that preset back up, tweak it, re-record, etc.

Do you spend 2 minutes pulling up something with a plugin you know well, knowing full well that you can tweak it as you please because it's just on a MIDI track. It's not even whether or not it can make the sounds, it's what the user knows. I don't think we're gonna get a true successor to Kronos because it's easier to do the really "meaty stuff" in your DAW anyways. And I think this makes sense, since it's pretty universally the workflow for music production nowadays. I think it feels like a product that understands people have a DAW with plugins, and they aren't gonna do everything on their workstation any more they might not even use any sounds from the Nautilus in their final recording. It's more focused on the core features people would look for in Kronos, without the complexity to make it overwhelming. But the UI is entirely different, and a lot more modern looking (for one, it's in "dark mode" which immediately makes it feel newer IMO). It's got less features than the previous model, and as result sits at about half the price. Kronos has tabs within tabs within tabs, and while it's ridiculously powerful and feature rich, I think most can agree that the UI looks a bit daunting and dated. If you look at the Triton and Kronos, it's clear that the UI just kept getting revised and extended, not redesigned. Complexity of features and UI basically just kept going up and up.
Price point may have varied somewhat between units but somewhere in the range of 4K, give or take (with the OASYS being through the roof priced in comparison, but that fits with the product). I think this is reflected heavily when you look at all the workstations leading up to the Kronos, and compare that to the Nautilus.įor a couple decades it was basically just a push to add features and extend capability. The Kronos does everything I ever dreamed of and wanted so bad!įrom a marketing point of view, I can understand Korg's policy of listing the Kronos under discontinued products, because they want to sell their new product Nautilus. I also own a Fantom and a Fantom is simply not a Kronos and a Nautilus is a stripped Kronos. Proud and deeply satisfied Kronos X owner for like 7 years here, using it in (home) studio and onstage, previously semi-pro and now as hobby :)
